Former President of Spanish Football Federation Banned for 3 Years Amid Sexual Assault Investigation

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has been handed a three-year ban from all football-related activities by FIFA. This follows an investigation into allegations of sexual assault made against Rubiales by Spanish player Jenni Hermoso. The ban means Rubiales is no longer eligible to run for the RFEF presidency or participate in the general assembly.

FIFA initially imposed a provisional three-month suspension on Rubiales on August 26, after he allegedly kissed Hermoso without her consent following the Women’s World Cup final on August 20. The case was subsequently investigated by Spain’s high court following a criminal complaint by Hermoso, leading to FIFA’s decision.

In its statement, FIFA cited a breach of article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code as the basis for Rubiales’ ban. As a result, he is forbidden from engaging in any football-related activities at both national and international levels for the next three years.

The ban also has implications within Spain’s sporting landscape. Rubiales is now ineligible to participate in the RFEF elections or general assembly under the new electoral regime for sports federations introduced by Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD) in the previous month.

Rubiales, 46, had held the position of RFEF president until his resignation in July 2021, amid growing concerns over the sexual assault allegations made against him. The investigation by the Spanish high court is ongoing, and the outcome will determine any further legal consequences for Rubiales.

The case has sent shockwaves through the world of Spanish football, highlighting the importance of addressing sexual assault allegations within the sport. It also underscores the accountability and repercussions now faced by individuals in positions of power.

As Rubiales awaits the court’s decision, the football community and fans worldwide are closely watching the developments in this case. The outcome will not only impact the future of Rubiales’ career but also serve as a significant moment in the ongoing fight against sexual assault in football.
