Renowned theatre personality Ratan Thiyam has withdrawn from the Manipur peace committee, which was set up by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate peacemaking among various ethnic groups in the state. Thiyam asserts that only with government intervention can the ethnic crisis in Manipur be resolved. The 51-member peace committee, headed by Governor Anusuiya Uikey, comprises leaders and representatives from different communities in the state. However, an important Meitei civil society organisation has announced its withdrawal from the peace committee, while an apex Kuki organisation expressed its unhappiness over the committee’s unilateral formation. The ethnic violence began in Manipur on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised by a tribal student body in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The violence has so far killed more than 120 people and injured more than 350.
