Israeli Warplanes Strike Iranian Positions in Southern Syria
Israeli warplanes conducted airstrikes in southern Syria in response to missile attacks originating from Syrian territory into Israeli-controlled areas. The Israeli military confirmed the airstrikes, stating that their fighter planes targeted launch platforms used for the missile attacks. The airstrikes caused material damage to military sites in the Daraa Countryside, according to Syria’s official news agency.
The Israeli military did not provide specific details about the targets struck but Israeli public broadcaster Kan News reported that the airstrikes focused on locations associated with Iran’s allies in the Daraa region. The Ahrar Houran Gathering website provided further information, stating that four airstrikes were carried out in the western countryside of Daraa, targeting positions linked to the Assad regime and Iranian militias.
Specifically, two airstrikes hit the command headquarters of the 112th Brigade of regime forces, located east of the city of Nawa. The artillery battalion known as the Hamra Battalion, which belongs to the 112th Brigade, was also targeted with two airstrikes. The extent of casualties among the militias is not yet known.
The 112th Brigade and its battalions serve as important bases for Iranian militias operating in the western Daraa region. In previous incidents, Israeli airstrikes have targeted this brigade in response to Katyusha missile launches aimed at the Syrian Golan region.
This recent escalation in southern Syria coincides with heavy Israeli artillery strikes on sites associated with the Syrian regime in Quneitra. The Israeli military also dropped leaflets over the western countryside of Daraa and Quneitra, holding regime forces accountable for missile launches toward the occupied Golan Heights.
Meanwhile, Israel has been conducting an intense aerial bombardment campaign against the Gaza Strip and has issued warnings to Iranian militias against involvement in the conflict. This broader context underscores the complexity of the situation and the regional tensions at play.
The recent airstrikes by Israeli warplanes in southern Syria reflect the ongoing challenges faced by both Israel and its neighbors. The situation remains fluid, and the impacts of these airstrikes on the regional dynamics are yet to unfold. As tensions continue to escalate, the international community watches with concern, hopeful for a peaceful resolution to this complex and volatile situation.
