Ice hockey players in the UK will soon be required to wear neck guards following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of American player Adam Johnson. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) announced new measures to improve player safety, stating that neck guards will be mandatory from January 1st, 2024, for all on-ice activities. However, the EIHA strongly recommends that players start wearing neck guards immediately, although this is not yet mandatory due to anticipated supply issues.

The decision comes after Johnson’s neck was cut by a skate blade during a game between the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers. The 29-year-old Minnesota native had previously played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The EIHA expressed its commitment to preventing such tragic accidents in the future and stated that it will conduct a thorough review of player safety equipment within the next 12 months. This review will include helmets, mouthguards, gumshields, and facial protection. Additionally, all clubs will be required to demonstrate that they proactively manage player safety.

Ice Hockey UK and Scottish Ice Hockey also support these measures, highlighting the collective responsibility within the sporting community to prioritize player safety. The EIHA acknowledges the somber impact of Johnson’s death on the global sporting community and emphasizes the importance of ensuring player safety in all sports.

While players in the UK are currently allowed to play without neck guards after turning 18, the introduction of mandatory neck guards aims to prevent any further tragic incidents. The EIHA’s strong recommendation for immediate implementation demonstrates their commitment to player safety.

In conclusion, the EIHA’s decision to make neck guards mandatory for ice hockey players in the UK from January 1st, 2024, is a significant step towards enhancing player safety. The tragic death of Adam Johnson has prompted the association to address player safety comprehensively, with a thorough review of all safety equipment to be conducted in the coming year. By prioritizing player safety, the EIHA aims to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.
