The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India will investigate the death of Assam Police officer, Junmoni Rabha. Assam Director General of Police, G.P. Singh, previously recommended a CBI probe into the mysterious death, which occurred last month in a road accident in Nagaon district. The government of India assigned the investigation of the case to the CBI, and under Secretary to the Government of India, Rajeev Kumar Khare, extended the powers and jurisdiction of members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment to the whole state of Assam for the investigation.
Assam police initially entrusted the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate Rabha’s death. However, the opposition leader and Congress leader, Debabrata Saikia, has demanded an enquiry by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate. A seven-member team of the Assam Human Rights Commission led by Santanu Bharali recently visited Rabha’s house.
The investigation will cover four cases, including FIR No. 183/2023, FIR No. 84/2023, FIR No. 443/2023, and FIR No. 87/2023. The police registered complaints under these FIRs over the coming days, related to alleged offences such as abetment, conspiracy, and other offences arising from the same case.
The situation is developing, and the CBI will take the necessary time to investigate the case thoroughly. The community has called for transparency from the authorities throughout the process, with the hope that the investigation will provide closure for the loved ones and colleagues of the officer.
