Gang Membership and Family Breakdown: A Troubling Correlation Unveiled

A recent social enquiry report has shed light on the correlation between gang membership and family breakdown, highlighting their role as predictors of social disorder. Government ministers, though aware of this correlation, have yet to take concrete action due to the constraints posed by existing structures.

The evidence presented in the report, which specifically examines the One Don murder convicts and the increasing number of prisoners in our overcrowded prisons, reveals the impoverished backgrounds of the majority. Lack of a father figure, overwhelmed mothers, lack of proper schooling and moral guidance, and the influence of poverty and bad company contribute to this dire situation.

Moreover, there has been a surge in conflicts among intimate partners, cutting across different social classes. These conflicts often escalate into animosity, violence, and, tragically, the harm of innocent children. Stable relationships are not given sufficient importance, and the culture of celebrating men with multiple partners further exacerbates the problem.

The fear of crime, both from rebel groups and from official sources, is significantly impacting people’s confidence and ability to lead productive lives. However, little is being done to address this issue, despite ample evidence suggesting that stable homes, morally uplifting environments for children, purposeful activities like work, and comprehensive education are crucial for fostering social adjustment.

Regrettably, the government continues to allocate more funds to fighting crime rather than proactively curbing it. Though there are adequate funds for education, the focus remains on exam preparation rather than character formation and correction.

It is important to acknowledge that the children of our nation are closely observing our actions. The influence of media and advertising cannot be underestimated, as they often promote materialistic ideals and superficial values. Weddings and funerals have become opportunities to exhibit status and glamour, rather than focusing on genuine relationships and social validation.

Recent comments indicate that authorities, both at home and in schools, prioritize grooming over literacy. This raises important questions about the perversion of school board authority and emphasizes the need for democratic decision-making within schools.

Last week, the Prime Minister, in a somewhat desperate tone, urged voters not to give up on their dreams of prosperity. However, for the past seven years, these dreams have remained deferred, leaving many to question what the average Jamaican can realistically expect from their effort and loyalty.

Rather than fixating on the notion of prosperity, let us instead focus on attaining sufficiency for all. This can be achieved through committed relationships as a prerequisite for parenting, access to quality healthcare, affordable food, and a sound education regardless of means. Idleness and joblessness are detrimental to the community and degrade the human spirit, much like slavery did in the past. Modest housing, achieved through personal effort and state assistance, is also integral to sufficiency.

When it comes to election campaigns, it is crucial that we demand these basic values and services from our political candidates and parties. It is entirely feasible to achieve basic sufficiency for all within our resources and lifetimes. By offering Jamaicans credible prospects of attaining these essentials, our paranoia about crime and violence will naturally decrease. A modest middle-class living should be our national trajectory, as it promotes equality and stability.

Furthermore, it is disheartening that Jamaica did not vote on a United Nations resolution aimed at protecting civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations in the Gaza crisis. This silence raises questions about our commitment to human rights and our principled stance on global issues. We must remember the legacy of leaders like Hugh Shearer who championed human rights and African liberation. We should not abandon our principled foreign policy for the sake of servility to more powerful nations.

In order to genuinely support peace and justice in Gaza, it is essential to maintain an even-handed approach that recognizes the coexistence of individuals with Jewish and Arab ancestry in Jamaica. This should drive us to actively engage with the ongoing conflict and promote fairness and humanity.

The humane soul of the Jamaican people must not be betrayed by our leaders’ inaction. It is high time for an apology and reparatory actions. Tomorrow should not pass without addressing this issue and rectifying our course. It is imperative to prioritize life, fairness, peace, and justice in all our actions.
