Shaktikanta Das, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has received the prestigious ‘Governor of the Year’ award at London’s Central Banking Awards 2023. The ceremony honored top banking officials who played a vital role during Covid-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the fight against inflation. Das has been recognized for his contribution in keeping inflation under control in India, with bright growth prospects.
Das, a retired IAS officer, has held positions in the Central and State Governments, and has served in the areas of Finance, Taxation, Industries, and Infrastructure. He has also been directly involved with the preparation of eight Union Budgets. Das has represented India in international forums such as IMF, G20, BRICS, SAARC, among others.
The Central Banking Awards 2023 had two top-prize winners. The National Bank of Ukraine was awarded the Central Bank of the Year while Governor Das received the Governor of the Year award.
Das participated in the opening plenary session of Summer Meetings organized by Central Banking in London. In March, Central Banking praised Das for cementing critical reforms, overseeing world-leading payments innovation, and steering India through difficult times with a steady hand and well-crafted turn of phrase.
Shaktikanta Das has been the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India since December 12, 2018. Prior to this, he was acting as a Member of the 15th Finance Commission and G20 Sherpa of India. He is a postgraduate from St Stephen’s College, Delhi University.
This recognition highlights the dedication and excellence of Das in achieving stability in India’s economy while navigating challenging times and paving the way for future growth.
