Portuguese Businessman Rescued from Kidnapping Syndicate in Johannesburg
A Portuguese businessman in Johannesburg became the latest victim of a kidnapping syndicate but was thankfully rescued by the police. The 51-year-old man was kidnapped outside his business premises in Bramley, Johannesburg north, and held captive in Kempton Park. The police’s national anti-kidnapping task team came to his aid when they raided a house on Tuesday and apprehended suspects involved in this heinous crime.
Brig Athlenda Mathe, the police spokesperson, revealed that nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping syndicate. At the house in Kempton Park where the businessman was found, authorities arrested four men and a woman. Moreover, two women and a man were apprehended at another identified address in Hillbrow. Shockingly, one of the detained individuals turned out to be a 41-year-old police officer who was arrested while at work.
According to Mathe, this syndicate is believed to have been involved in at least five kidnapping cases targeting Portuguese businessmen. Their modus operandi involved demanding ransom payments from the victims’ families. However, in this particular incident, no ransom had been paid by the time the police successfully rescued the victim.
National police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola expressed his disappointment over the arrest of one of their own. Nevertheless, he emphasized the police force’s dedication to eliminating corruption within their ranks, stating that no member of the police service is above the law, regardless of their rank. Gen Masemola reiterated the commitment to rooting out rogue officers.
