The Supreme Court of India has declined a plea to prevent an upcoming Mahapanchayat to be held in Purola town of Uttarakhand, citing a rise in communal tensions in the state. The vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah refused to hear the plea but allowed the petitioner to approach the Uttarakhand High Court or the concerned authorities for relief as per law. The plea was regarding an ultimatum given to a particular community to evacuate the area before the Mahapanchayat or face dire consequences. The district administration has already denied permission for the proposed Mahapanchayat on 15 June over alleged love-jihad cases, and section 144 has been imposed in Purola town. The court suggested that the petitioner trusts the Uttarakhand High Court, which can pass appropriate orders if there is already a direction given by the Supreme Court.
