Organ transplants have saved countless lives over the years, and thanks to advancements in medical technology and surgical techniques, complex operations like liver, kidney, and heart transplants have a high success rate. However, navigating the process of organ transplantation can be confusing and overwhelming for both patients and their families. In an effort to provide guidance, Sunayana Singh, CEO of ORGAN India – an initiative of the Parashar Foundation that aims to enable organ donation and transplantation in India – answers some frequently asked questions about organ transplants.

Singh explains that individuals of all ages can register as organ donors and should inform their families of their decision. However, given the religious, cultural, and social beliefs surrounding organ donation, she advises individuals to have multiple conversations with their families about their reasons for pledging their organs, share success stories and information, and help their families through the donation process. Those interested in registering as donors can do so through legitimate organ donation NGOs, government portals, or by approaching a Government Medical College.

Singh also discusses the cost of organ donation, assuring donors that there is no cost to the donor, their family, or estate. Additionally, she dispels the myth that organs can be retrieved without consent if an individual has a donor card. In reality, the donor’s family or immediate relatives are always asked for permission before organs are retrieved.

Singh emphasizes that organ donation does not affect the appearance of the body or delay funeral arrangements. Patients with pre-existing medical conditions can often be donors, as a team of experts determines whether their organs are suitable for transplant. Finally, donated organs are matched against a waiting list of individuals based on many criteria like blood type and tissue type.

While the process of organ transplantation can be overwhelming, resources like ORGAN India’s Transplant Guide are available to answer common questions. Through education and awareness, organ donation and transplantation can save even more lives.
