A group of railway passengers in Assam have called for the resumption of train services that have been halted since the Covid-19 pandemic began. The Assam Rail Passengers’ Association met with Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, saying they were seeking his help in resuming 21 trains that were stopped in the northeast of the country and neighbouring states without prior notification to passengers. Fourteen of the 21 trains that were cancelled had been running in the Assam stretch. Although some passenger trains have resumed, fares have tripled, and popular trains like Brahmaputra Mail and Shatabdi Express have been stopped, or rerouted without warning, say the passengers.
