Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura has introduced free HIV viral load testing, aiming to save both time and expenses for individuals living with HIV (PLHIV). The initiative, which was made possible through a partnership between the Jammu and Kashmir AIDS Control Society (JKACS) and SKIMS Soura, will utilize the existing testing capacity of COBAS RT-PCR equipment at SKIMS.
Previously, PLHIV samples had to be sent to Chandigarh for viral load testing, resulting in longer turnaround times for the final results. With the implementation of in-house testing at SKIMS Soura’s Department of Microbiology, these delays will be significantly reduced. The expedited reporting will allow clinicians to promptly provide necessary treatment to PLHIV, ensuring timeliness and effectiveness.
This collaboration between JKACS and SKIMS is an extension of a similar memorandum of understanding signed between JKACS and GMC, Jammu a few days ago. The partnership aims to benefit patients in the Jammu and Kashmir region by providing vital testing facilities within their own area. This local accessibility will not only save time and effort but also reduce the financial burden associated with traveling to other regions for testing.
The introduction of free HIV viral load testing at SKIMS Soura marks a significant step forward in the treatment and care of PLHIV. By leveraging the spare testing capacity of COBAS RT-PCR equipment, this initiative will enhance the efficiency of healthcare services in Srinagar while ensuring that individuals living with HIV receive prompt and appropriate treatment.
