Georgia Republican Congressman, Drew Ferguson, recently revealed that he changed his vote for House Speaker due to bullying tactics and death threats from supporters of Representative Jim Jordan. Ferguson initially backed Jordan in the first round of voting but decided to change his vote after witnessing the aggressive tactics employed by Jordan’s camp. In a statement released on Thursday, Ferguson expressed his concerns about the intimidating strategies and pressure campaigns utilized by Jordan and his allies to influence votes. He argued that the House Republican Conference does not need a bully as its Speaker and that such behavior is unacceptable. Ferguson further shared that he had spoken directly to Jordan about his concerns and initially planned to support him again. However, the mounting pressure and attacks on fellow members led him to reconsider his decision. Ferguson ultimately voted for Louisiana Republican Steve Scalise in the second and third votes. Scalise, who had been nominated earlier for Speaker, withdrew from the race last week. Ferguson commended Scalise, highlighting him as a principled conservative and a unifying leader. Unfortunately, Ferguson and his family faced severe consequences following his vote. Shortly after casting his ballot, they started receiving death threats. Ferguson strongly condemned these threats, stating that they are unforgivable and will never be tolerated. While Ferguson changed his position, other Georgia Republican representatives, as well as those from Tennessee, continued to support Jordan in the subsequent vote. In the end, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries secured 210 votes, Jordan received 194 votes, and 25 votes went to other Republican candidates. This incident reflects the tensions and high stakes involved in the race for House Speaker. The issue highlights the need for respectful discourse and the rejection of bullying tactics in political debates. The Republican Party, like any other, should prioritize unity and principled leadership.
