The Bihar Congress President, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, has dismissed concerns about any potential electoral loss for the Grand Alliance after the resignation of Santosh Kumar Suman, President of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and son of Jitan Ram Manjhi from the Bihar state Government. Singh stated, The separation of Jitan Ram Manjhi or his son Santosh Manjhi will not cause any electoral loss to the grand alliance. He went on to refer to Manjhi as Aaya-Ram Gaya-Ram, suggesting his influence and vote bank in Bihar were insignificant, meaning that even if he joined the BJP, it would not harm the grand alliance. Singh also noted that Manjhi’s talk of reservation and Dalit welfare was ironic as the BJP is anti-Dalit and anti-reservation. Manjhi had apparently resigned as he felt he could no longer protect his self-respect or his party while part of the grand alliance. This is a significant blow for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is leading the Opposition meeting on 23 June, which is advocating opposition unity. Kumar has been spearheading efforts to bring all Opposition parties together against the BJP government at the Centre, with an eye on next year’s Lok Sabha polls.
