Labour MP Liam Byrne’s former aides have received compensation after a mishandled investigation into allegations of bullying. At least four employees received payoffs this month from the Commons after the independent complaints system breached their anonymity during the inquiry. The investigation found that Byrne had bullied a former assistant following a minor office dispute, leading to a two-day suspension. The former aides took legal action against the Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS) for disclosing their identities to Byrne during the probe, contrary to assurances of anonymity. The ICGS compensation is thought to be in the five figures. The former aides expressed disappointment over Byrne’s recent election as chairman of the business and trade committee, with one saying it was a kick in the teeth and sent the wrong message about politics.
