Gaelán Quartet Launches National Tour with Breathtaking Schumann and Shostakovich Performances

Renowned musical ensemble, the Gaelán Quartet, is all set to embark on a national tour, captivating audiences with their mesmerizing renditions of Schumann and Shostakovich. The tour will kick off in Galway and make its way to various cities including Ballina, Cork, Tinahely, and Dublin. The Gaelán Quartet has commissioned an exquisite new string quartet from esteemed composer Michael Doherty, which will be a highlight of their performances.

As part of this eagerly anticipated tour, the Gaelán Quartet will showcase the enduring genius of Schumann and Shostakovich. Schumann’s magnificent A minor quartet, composed in 1842, will captivate listeners with its beauty and depth. Reflecting the influences of his predecessor, Beethoven, Schumann’s composition carries glimpses of the future of music. It is one of five remarkable chamber music works he created that year, two of which were also string quartets.

The Gaelán Quartet will conclude their enchanting performances with Shostakovich’s profoundly moving eighth quartet. Composed in Dresden in 1960, this soul-stirring piece was officially dedicated to ‘the victims of fascism and war,’ although it concealed a broader tribute to victims of totalitarianism, including Shostakovich himself.

To further enhance this extraordinary musical experience, the Gaelán Quartet has collaborated with the National String Quartet Foundation. Supported by their principal funders, the Arts Council and RTÉ Lyric FM, this partnership ensures the seamless presentation of this tour.

The Gaelán Quartet’s national tour will commence in Galway on November 7, at a venue to be confirmed. The following night, they will grace the stage of the Ballina Arts Centre in Mayo. The concert will commence at 8 p.m., promising an unforgettable evening for all in attendance. For more information, please contact (096) 73593 or visit ballinaartscentre.com.

After captivating audiences in Galway and Mayo, the tour will move on to Cork on November 9, Tinahely on November 11, and Dublin on November 12, extending the opportunity for music enthusiasts across the country to witness the Gaelán Quartet’s extraordinary performances.

Prepare to be enthralled as the Gaelán Quartet takes you on a transcendent musical journey, weaving together the timeless compositions of Schumann and Shostakovich with their own commissioned piece. Experience the power of music and embrace the artistry of these remarkable musicians as they bring the works of these master composers to life.
