Shoplifting Incident at GameStop Results in Fatality: Store Manager Facing Manslaughter Charges

A shoplifting incident at a GameStop in Pembroke Pines, Florida took a tragic turn when it ended in a fatal shooting. The store’s manager, Derrick Guerrero, is now facing charges in connection with the incident.

On Tuesday evening, authorities responded to a reported shooting at a strip mall near Pines Boulevard and Hiatus Road. An overnight investigation revealed that the victim, an adult male, had been shoplifting in the store and was observed by store employee Derrick Guerrero.

The victim had been in the store for about an hour before requesting a piece of merchandise that required the manager to retrieve it using a ladder. While the manager was retrieving the merchandise, the victim took the opportunity to attempt a shoplifting act by going behind the front counter.

Guerrero confronted the victim inside the store, and the victim tried to flee with the stolen merchandise through the front door. In response, the manager retrieved a firearm and fired a single shot at the victim, striking him in the torso.

The victim managed to flee the scene and got into a vehicle driven by his girlfriend, who then stopped within the plaza and called 911. The victim was unresponsive when found in the front seat and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injuries.

It is important to note that the victim did not threaten the manager or possess any weapons. Video footage captured crime scene technicians leaving the store with bags of evidence.

Derrick Guerrero now faces charges of manslaughter for his actions. During his appearance in court, Guerrero, a father of two and a former U.S. Marine, was given a $25,000 bond. He is prohibited from possessing any weapons and will be required to wear an ankle monitor once released.

Pembroke Pines Police Major Al Xiques emphasized that the incident did not appear to be a result of self-defense, leading to the charge of manslaughter. It is important to distinguish between theft and robbery, as no allegations of robbery were made in this case.

As the investigation continues, the identity and age of the victim have not been disclosed.

This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential consequences that can arise from escalating confrontations. Pemboke Pines Police and relevant authorities will continue their efforts to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event, and justice will be sought accordingly.
