Mount Laurel Man Pleads Guilty to Racist Rant Against Black Neighbor, Faces Eight Years in Prison

Edward C. Mathews, a Mount Laurel man whose racist rant against a Black neighbor went viral last year, has pleaded guilty to four counts of bias intimidation and a drug charge. In a news release, Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw announced that Mathews, 47, has agreed to an eight-year prison sentence as part of a plea deal arranged with her office. The plea was entered on Tuesday before Superior Court Judge Gerard H. Breland, who has scheduled Mathews’ sentencing for December 8.

The charges of bias intimidation stem from Mathews’ harassment of former neighbors, while the drug charge involves the possession of a controlled dangerous substance with the intent to distribute. Investigators discovered numerous hallucinogenic mushrooms during a search of Mathews’ home.

The incident gained national attention when a video of Mathews taunting his Black neighbor and using racial slurs went viral in July 2021. Mathews even disclosed his address in the video, inviting people to confront him. Three days later, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of his residence. Mathews was later taken into custody, and four protesters were charged with attacking police officers and causing property damage.

The investigation into Mathews’ behavior revealed a pattern of abuse against his neighbors, including leaving a threatening note on their vehicle. He was indicted in early 2022.

Mathews previously shared with The Inquirer that he regretted the incident, explaining that it stemmed from an ongoing dispute with the homeowners’ association for the Essex Place condominiums. He also admitted that he was under the influence of alcohol during the confrontation.

This case highlights the serious consequences individuals may face for engaging in hate-driven acts. The guilty plea and subsequent prison sentence indicate that the justice system does not tolerate such behavior. It also serves as a reminder that bias-based harassment can have far-reaching effects on individuals and communities.

By holding Mathews accountable, the legal system sends a clear message that racism and prejudice have no place in society. While this case showcases the consequences of one individual’s actions, it also underscores the importance of promoting racial equality and fostering understanding among neighbors and communities.

As the sentencing date approaches, the impact of Mathews’ actions on his victims and the community will be considered. It is an opportunity for justice to be served and for healing to begin for those affected by his hate-filled rant.

The outcome of this case holds significance beyond the individual involved. It serves as a reminder that everyone should strive for respect, tolerance, and inclusivity in their daily lives. Communities must come together to condemn racism and actively work towards creating a society that is free from prejudice and discrimination.
