The Calcutta High Court has directed the deployment of central forces in seven sensitive districts ahead of the West Bengal panchayat polls. The court has also asked the West Bengal State Election Commission to review whether deployment of central forces is necessary in other districts. The deployment of central forces has been demanded by opposition parties and state government employees. The court has instructed the state government and the State Election Commission to ensure peaceful elections by deploying adequate security. Furthermore, it has directed that CCTVs should be installed in every polling booth and if necessary, the entire polling process should be recorded. The court has also barred the use of civic volunteers in poll-related duties but allowed the deployment of contractual state government employees in other poll-related duties if necessary. The Union government will bear the costs for the deployment of central forces.
