The Indian Congress party has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent ‘rozgar mela,’ during which he handed over 70,000 appointment letters to newly recruited government employees. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh called the event a tamasha or a show, accusing PM Modi of personalizing governance through the issuance of appointment letters to candidates who have already been through a recruitment process. Ramesh further stated that the government was offering no new jobs, but instead garnering publicity through a desperate gimmick to manage headlines. The opposition’s backlash comes as PM Modi revealed growth in the Indian economy, citing increased manufacturing activity and growing employment opportunities.
