Chicago Man Arrested for Attempted Murder and Armed Robbery During Car Sale
In a disturbing incident, a Chicago man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and armed robbery related to a car sale gone wrong. The accused, Tyron Johnson, allegedly robbed and attempted to shoot a man during what was supposed to be a routine car sale in February 2022. The incident took place in an alley near the 1300 block of Michigan Street, according to court documents.
Johnson reportedly met the victim in a black pickup truck, claiming that he wanted to sell a car to him. However, once inside the truck, Johnson allegedly brandished a weapon and demanded the victim’s money. He then proceeded to search through the victim’s phone before a struggle ensued over the weapon.
During the struggle, the victim managed to remove an extended magazine of ammunition from the gun. However, Johnson was able to regain control and fired a bullet at the victim, narrowly missing his head. The bullet lodged into a metal pillar behind the driver’s side of the truck, leaving the victim shaken but thankfully unharmed.
Despite the harrowing experience, the victim bravely fought back and wrestled the weapon away from Johnson. However, Johnson prevented him from leaving and reportedly beat the victim while demanding the gun back. Eventually, both individuals fled the scene.
Determined to bring the perpetrator to justice, authorities used cell phone records to trace Johnson’s location to the area of the robbery at the time it took place. Additionally, ballistics testing revealed that an extended magazine found at the scene of a separate hit-and-run in March 2022 in Hammond matched the gun that Munster police had seized from a suspect during a traffic stop.
Further evidence implicating Johnson came in the form of DNA found on the extended magazine and the gun seized by Munster police, which detectives confirmed was the same weapon fired during the car sale robbery.
Johnson was arrested in Cook County on October 4th and subsequently extradited to Lake County. He now faces a host of serious charges including attempted murder, armed robbery, robbery resulting in bodily injury, attempted battery, pointing a firearm, and battery.
For the safety of the community, Johnson is currently incarcerated at the Lake County Jail with no possibility of posting bail until October 31st. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 27th.
This disturbing incident serves as a reminder to exercise caution when engaging in transactions with unfamiliar individuals. It is crucial to prioritize personal safety and take appropriate precautions to minimize the risk of becoming a victim of crime.
