French Police Investigate Possible Poisoning of Former Russian TV Journalist Who Protested Against Ukraine War

French authorities are currently investigating a suspected case of poisoning involving a former Russian state TV journalist, Marina Ovsyannikova, who had quit her job after making an on-air protest against the war in Ukraine. Ovsyannikova, who fled to France last year with her daughter, fell suddenly ill as she left her Paris apartment and had to be taken to the hospital, according to a statement from the French capital’s prosecutor’s office. The 45-year-old journalist expressed her suspicion of being poisoned. Police have initiated an examination of her apartment as part of the ongoing investigation.

Ovsyannikova gained international attention back in March last year when she interrupted a live broadcast to voice her opposition to the war in Ukraine. Holding up a sign in both English and Russian, she made it clear that she was against the conflict. Following her resignation, she became an activist, actively protesting against the war and condemning those responsible for it on social media. As a result, she was fined for violating protest laws, with the fine amounting to 30,000 roubles (approximately £223.40 at the time).

In August last year, Russian authorities carried out a raid on Ovsyannikova’s home, after which she was placed under house arrest until her successful escape to Europe. However, earlier this month, a Moscow court sentenced her to eight and a half years in absentia for spreading false information about the Russian army.

Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders, which assisted Ovsyannikova in leaving Russia, stated that its team has been providing support during her medical treatment. The organization has been alongside her, offering assistance since she fell ill.

The case of Marina Ovsyannikova highlights the risks faced by journalists and activists who speak out against the Russian government or its military actions. It also sheds light on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the repercussions faced by those who dare to oppose it. As the investigation unfolds, many are awaiting further details surrounding the potential poisoning incident and hoping for a swift resolution to ensure justice for Ovsyannikova.
