Jeannine M. Baker, the backbone of blues legend Lonnie Brooks’ family, passed away at the age of 82. As the wife of Lonnie Brooks and the mother of Ronnie Baker Brooks and Wayne Baker Brooks, all talented blues musicians, Jeannine played a crucial role in their lives and careers.

Ronnie Baker Brooks fondly remembers his mother as the glue that held their family together. When Lonnie Brooks was on the road, Jeannine took charge and ensured that their household was filled with love and support. Although they faced financial struggles early on in Lonnie’s career, Jeannine’s love and dedication never wavered.

Jeannine was a regional manager for the Internal Revenue Service and emphasized the importance of doing things the right way. When Ronnie Baker Brooks received cash payments for a temp job, Jeannine insisted that he pay his Social Security taxes and urged him to get a proper paycheck. She was determined to protect her family from any potential tax problems.

Not only did Jeannine offer guidance in financial matters, but she also took charge of the family’s daily routines. When the family basement turned into an all-day-and-into-the-night music session, Jeannine would demand that everyone come upstairs to eat. Despite Lonnie Brooks’ fame, Ronnie Baker Brooks recognizes his mother as the true backbone of their family.

Jeannine’s influence extended beyond their music careers. She managed the family’s books and played a vital role in helping Ronnie and his late sister, Jackie Graham, start their own recording company. Jeannine’s support and encouragement were instrumental in their success.

Throughout their lives, Jeannine ensured that her children stayed away from trouble. When they were living across the street from Washington Park, which was known for its rough neighborhood, Jeannine organized indoor activities for them to keep them safe. Despite the presence of gangs in the area, Jeannine would tell her children that they were part of their father’s gang and would be protected.

Jeannine’s love for Lonnie Brooks spanned over 50 years. They even divorced at one point but remained best friends, realizing that they needed each other. Jeannine’s determination and strength extended beyond their personal lives. She worked at the IRS for more than two decades, balancing her career with raising her family.

Despite her passing, Jeannine’s legacy lives on. Her daughters, Gina Baker Landers and Denise Baker, followed in her footsteps and now work as hair and makeup artists for film productions. Jeannine’s nurturing spirit and encouragement inspired her family to pursue their passions.

Ronnie Baker Brooks received the news of his mother’s death just before he was about to perform at a show in Kansas City. Overwhelmed with grief, he decided to proceed with the show and channeled his emotions into his music. Jeannine may not have been a musician herself, but she always listened to Ronnie’s music and provided valuable feedback. Her support and guidance will be deeply missed.

In addition to Ronnie and Wayne Baker Brooks, Gina Baker Landers, Denise Baker, Robert Lauderdale, and Russell Baker survive Jeannine.

Jeannine M. Baker, the beloved backbone of the Brooks family, will be remembered for her unwavering love, determination, and support. Her legacy as a guiding force in the lives of her family members will continue to inspire for generations to come.
