The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is all set to introduce an alternative to polythene bags on June 16, said Jammu Mayor Rajinder Sharma. During a Dogri poetry meeting Soonkar Tawi Di, organized by Nami Dogri Sanstha on World Environment Day, the Jammu Mayor highlighted the efforts of the JMC in promoting cleanliness in Jammu City and preserving the Tawi River. According to the Mayor, the JMC has reached out to nearly 9 lakh people, encouraging them to refrain from using polythene bags. As part of their campaign, the JMC will launch an alternative to polythene bags on June 16.
The Jammu Mayor expressed his appreciation for the poets who showcased their concern for the preservation and conservation of the River Tawi through their poems. He emphasized the need for collective support from the people of Jammu to protect the holy river. In addition to the JMC’s ongoing campaign to discourage the use of polythene bags, a resolution has been passed for the establishment of a Tawi Development Authority. Additionally, Saakh Visarjan in the holy river has been halted and conducted in the Canal with the cooperation of the people of Jammu.
The Jammu Mayor also mentioned the creation of a tree authority responsible for the protection and plantation of trees, as well as highlighting the treatment of discharge from city nallahs before it enters the River Tawi, ensuring its usability. He expressed his gratitude to all the poets for raising awareness about the River Tawi and urged the people of Jammu to support the JMC’s initiative by using bags approved by the JMC instead of polythene bags.
