The President of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, has asked the government of Tamil Nadu when it plans to shut down 500 Tasmac shops, as promised in the State Assembly by Excise and Prohibition Minister V Senthilbalaji on April 12. The Excise Minister had declared that 500 out of the 5329 Tasmac shops will be closed due to the request of gradually introducing liquor prohibition in the state. However, two months have passed since the announcement, and these liquor outlets are still open.
Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss also highlighted the harmful impact of alcohol in the state and criticized the illegal sale of alcohol, which tarnishes Tamil Nadu’s image as a place where liquor is sold illegally 24 hours a day. He also raised concerns over the state’s inability to act against drunkards who misbehave with women.
The Excise Minister has appealed to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to take action and put an end to the illegal liquor business. Meanwhile, the opposition parties are pressing the government to follow through on their promise to shut down 500 Tasmac shops to curb alcohol consumption in the state.
Alcoholism has long been an issue in Tamil Nadu, with reports of crimes like domestic violence and road accidents increasing due to excessive drinking. The opposition parties and concerned individuals believe that closing down Tasmac shops could be a significant step towards reducing alcoholism in the state. It remains to be seen when the government will take action on its promise to shut down these shops.
