Multiple Earthquakes Devastate Western Afghanistan: 15 Dead, 40 Injured
At least 15 people lost their lives and 40 were left injured in a series of devastating earthquakes that struck western Afghanistan on Saturday. The earthquakes, with a magnitude of 6.3 according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), were followed by additional tremors roughly 35 kilometers northwest of Herat.
The casualty figures were reported by Mullah Jan Sayeq, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s ministry of disaster management, and are based on primary reports from the Zinda Jan district of Herat province. However, reports of widespread damage to houses in the provinces of Farah and Badghis have been received, but details regarding casualties are yet to emerge from these areas.
In response to the unfolding crisis, emergency teams and volunteers are mobilizing to provide aid and support to the affected communities in Herat. Erfanullah Sharafzoi, spokesperson for the Afghan Red Crescent, confirmed the preparedness of these teams. The multiple tremors triggered panic among the residents of Herat, as described by Naseema. She reported that people had evacuated their houses and taken to the streets, with the city still experiencing aftershocks.
The devastating earthquake has caused significant destruction and has resulted in tragic loss of life. The priority now is to provide immediate assistance to the affected people and ensure that necessary medical aid is made available to the injured. Authorities are working diligently to assess the damage in Farah and Badghis, where reports suggest the impact has been severe.
As the situation unfolds, it is crucial to continue monitoring and assessing the needs of the affected regions. Cooperation between local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and volunteers is paramount to effectively address the challenges presented by this natural disaster.
The people of Afghanistan, particularly those in western provinces, are in urgent need of support and assistance. The international community is called upon to extend a helping hand to the affected communities and contribute to the relief efforts. Together, we can provide the necessary aid and alleviate the suffering caused by this devastating earthquake.
