Russia’s President Putin Emphasizes Economic Recovery and Defense of Traditions amid Ukraine Operation

October 6 – In a plenary session at the 20th annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed various topics, including Russia’s economic rebuilding, its ongoing operation in Ukraine, and the defense of its traditions, culture, and people. Here are the key points from Putin’s remarks:

1. Economic Rebuilding: President Putin highlighted Russia’s efforts to rebuild its economy, comparing it to the post-2014 food embargo period. Despite an increase in defense and security spending, real disposable income for Russian citizens is growing, unlike in Europe. Russia is diversifying its presence in growing markets around the world, particularly in Asia, as it moves away from the fading European market.

2. Nord Stream Gas Pipelines: Putin pointed out that the US has been the most interested party in undermining the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Nonetheless, Russia is determined to find those responsible for any attempts to impede the project. Germany still has the option to receive gas through the remaining pipeline branch, but Washington is reluctant to allow it. Furthermore, the US is indirectly threatening the TurkStream gas pipeline by supporting Ukraine’s plans to cause damage.

3. Nuclear Doctrine and Deterrence: Despite the existing nuclear deterrence policy, Putin stated that there is no need to change Russia’s national nuclear doctrine. Russia’s retaliatory strike in response to a potential nuclear attack would leave the aggressor with no chance of survival. Putin assured that no one in their right mind would consider using nuclear weapons against Russia. He also mentioned the successful completion of the Sarmat and Burevestnik missiles, signaling Russia’s strong position in nuclear deterrence.

4. Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: Putin revealed that Russia had proposed ways to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh issue before tensions escalated in the region. However, the leaders of Karabakh expressed their intention to continue fighting. He clarified that Karabakh officially joined Azerbaijan after Yerevan recognized the region’s status. Russia still supports Armenia and is ready to assist refugees, even though only a small number of people remain in the area.

5. Ukraine and Western Support: President Putin stressed that Russia’s special operation in Ukraine is not about territorial expansion but rather about providing security guarantees for Russian-speaking individuals who consider Russia their homeland. Putin mentioned Russia’s significant increase in military equipment production and the confidence of Russian forces. He also suggested that Ukraine’s economy is dependent on foreign aid, without which it would come to a halt.

6. European Relations and Russia’s Friends: Putin expressed concern about Europe’s actions, creating what he termed a new Iron Curtain. He criticized Europe for following the US’s lead, resulting in many Europeans feeling that their sovereignty has been compromised. On the other hand, Putin mentioned increasing friendships with individuals in Germany and France who share similar perspectives.

7. Global Financial System and BRICS: Putin argued that the current global financial system is imbalanced and fails to represent the interests of the majority. He emphasized that Russia has reduced its debts significantly while other nations, particularly in Africa, are burdened with unsustainable loan amounts. Furthermore, Putin proposed the establishment of a common system of payments within BRICS based on national currencies.

In conclusion, President Putin’s remarks at the Valdai Discussion Club shed light on Russia’s commitment to economic recovery, defense of traditions, and the ongoing Ukraine operation. He emphasized Russia’s increasing presence in alternative markets, its nuclear deterrence capabilities, and the need for a balanced global financial system. Putin reiterated his dedication to protecting Russian-speaking individuals in Ukraine, while expressing concerns about Europe’s actions and increasing friendships with individuals in Germany and France.
