UCSB Women’s Tennis Stars Shine at ITA All-American Championships

The UCSB Women’s Tennis team made an impressive showing at the 2023 ITA All-American Championships held in North Carolina this week. Camille Kiss, Amelia Honer, and Kira Reuter represented the university and displayed their remarkable skills against some of the finest college-level tennis players in the nation.

In the pre-qualifying singles bracket, Camille Kiss started off her tournament with a thrilling comeback. She faced an uphill battle against Maria Juliana Parra Romero from Liberty University, losing the first set 6-3. However, Kiss showed her resilience and fought back fiercely, winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-2. Her triumph propelled her into the Round of 64, where she faced off against Ahmani Guichard from UCLA. Despite a valiant effort, Kiss fell to the 13th seed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Amelia Honer faced the U.S. Open Junior champion and highly regarded newcomer Katherine Hui in the qualifying bracket. Undeterred by Hui’s impressive credentials, Honer delivered an outstanding performance, prevailing in a fiercely contested three-set match, with a final score of 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3. Unfortunately, her journey in the tournament was cut short in the Round of 64, where she engaged in another thrilling three-set battle against Bridget Stammel from Vanderbilt, ultimately falling 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Honer then partnered with Kira Reuter for the doubles matches in the Main Draw. Their first opponents were Anna Zyryanova and Sophia Abrams from North Carolina State. The UCSB duo held their ground, but the Wolfpack pair emerged victorious with a score of 7-5, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, Reuter and Honer faced the USC team of Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charney, but unfortunately, they were unable to secure a win, losing in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Despite some challenging losses, the UCSB Women’s Tennis team displayed their skill, determination, and competitive spirit throughout the championships. They showcased their talents against top-tier opponents and left their mark on the national stage.

Looking ahead, Kiss, Honer, Reuter, and the rest of the Gauchos will have the opportunity to compete in the Women of Troy Invite at USC on Friday. It will be another chance for them to showcase their talent and continue their pursuit of success on the tennis court.

In conclusion, the UCSB Women’s Tennis team displayed their prowess at the ITA All-American Championships, with Camille Kiss, Amelia Honer, and Kira Reuter showcasing their skills against formidable opponents. While there were a couple of tough losses, the Gauchos remain determined and eager to make their mark in future competitions.
