Sinaloa Cartel Takes a Stand Against Fentanyl Production as US Pressure Grows

In a surprising move, the Sinaloa Cartel has recently announced a ban on fentanyl production and sales. Large banners, signed by the notorious criminal group, have appeared on bridges in northern Mexico, declaring the strict prohibition of any involvement in the manufacture, transportation, or business related to fentanyl. This announcement comes at a time when US authorities are intensifying their efforts to combat drug cartels flooding the country with this deadly opioid, which has triggered the worst drug crisis the nation has ever experienced.

According to sources, the banners state, In Sinaloa, the sale, manufacture, transportation or any type of business that involves the substance known as fentanyl is strictly prohibited, including the sale of chemicals for its production. These narcomantas allegedly signed by Los Chapitos, the sons of the infamous ex-Mexican drug lord Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, have been strategically placed across various points in the State of Sinaloa.

However, skepticism surrounds the true intentions of the Sinaloa Cartel’s announcement. Leo Silva, a former US Drug Enforcement Administration agent who worked in Mexico, believes that this move is an attempt by the sons of Guzman to deflect blame for the rampant fentanyl production that continues to flood the US. Silva suggests that the Los Chapitos are using this ban as a ploy to shift the focus off themselves, particularly following the extradition of one of the brothers. Silva remarks, Coupled with the extradition of one of the brothers, it’s a ploy to take the heat off of them. I don’t see them stopping production.

It remains to be seen whether the Sinaloa Cartel, now under the control of Guzman’s sons, will truly enforce this ban throughout Sinaloa. Some question their willingness to halt production, as their primary motivation is driven by profits. Additionally, critics highlight the Biden administration’s policy approach towards immigration and the southern border, suggesting that the loose border controls could indirectly support the drug trade.

The appearance of these banners coincides with the escalating pressure from US authorities on Mexico to take decisive action against crime groups involved in fentanyl production. The United States continues to grapple with a rising number of drug overdoses, and this year is expected to see alarming new records.

In conclusion, while the Sinaloa Cartel’s ban on fentanyl production appears to be a significant development, doubts remain regarding its true impact. As the US intensifies its efforts to address the fentanyl crisis, it remains to be seen whether the Sinaloa Cartel will genuinely adhere to this ban or if it is merely a strategic move to divert attention. The fight against drug trafficking requires a multifaceted approach involving international cooperation and comprehensive measures to mitigate the devastating consequences of fentanyl abuse.
