Survey Reveals Troubling Trends in Lazy Developer Practices and Challenges Facing Organizations
Sauce Labs Inc released new survey data today that sheds light on the extent of lazy developer practices and the challenges that organizations face as a result. The report, based on a survey of 500 full-time developers in the U.S., aims to investigate the accuracy of the Lazy Developer stereotype and the underlying industry practices that contribute to it.
One of the most common transgressions highlighted in the report is developers pushing code to production without proper testing or merging pull requests without review. These practices can jeopardize software quality, user experience, and system stability, as well as introduce potential security vulnerabilities that can harm a company’s brand reputation and finances.
Another concerning trend identified in the survey is the increasing reliance on AI and large language models, like ChatGPT, by developers to write code faster. However, using untested code generated by such platforms introduces significant risks.
While individual lazy developer practices may not seem high risk on their own, the cumulative effect creates a substantial surface area for potential issues such as security hacks, service outages, and critical software bugs.
Age-related trends also emerged from the survey, indicating that the youngest developers (ages 18-24) and the oldest developers (ages 58+) are more likely to follow conservative review practices.
The report underscores that organizations face challenges beyond dealing with lazy developers, highlighting the need for significant organizational reforms.
Dave Rhodes, CEO of Sauce Labs, emphasizes the crucial role developers play in driving innovation but acknowledges that they often face resource constraints, increased pressure to ship faster, and obstacles in the DevOps toolchain. He stresses the importance of creating an environment where developers can thrive by setting realistic expectations, fostering a culture focused on quality and safety, and providing resources and tools aligned with modern development methods. Addressing these challenges will result in high-quality, secure code that enhances user experiences.
Avery Pennarun, CEO of Tailscale, a zero trust networking leader, believes that developers have historically had to prioritize convenience over security. However, Pennarun’s company aims to make the secure path the path of least resistance, encouraging developers to prioritize security and view the security team as partners rather than barriers.
