Title: Racial Equity Fund Bolsters Colorado Springs Non-Profits to Bridge Social Gaps

A Colorado Springs-based philanthropic initiative, the Racial Equity Fund, is spearheading efforts to foster a more inclusive and equitable community. Launched in late 2021 as a part of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation, the fund aims to uplift the generosity within communities of color while providing grants to charities that are led by and cater to communities of color.

Zuleika Johnson, a member of the fund’s advisory board, explained that the ultimate goal is to address the root causes of racial disparities and their impact on educational and health outcomes. By identifying organizations that tackle these disparities head-on, the Racial Equity Fund aims to make a meaningful difference.

In July, the Fund awarded approximately $84,000 in grants to 11 non-profit organizations operating within the community. One such recipient is Food to Power, which has evolved from a food distribution group to a multi-faceted equitable food provider over the past decade. Under the guidance of Executive Director Patience Kabwasa, the non-profit has been able to feed over 100,000 people in the Pikes Peak Region annually. The organization sources much of its produce from its own greenhouses and fields, ensuring that the community receives fresh and nutritious food.

Recognizing the intrinsic link between nutrition and health outcomes, Kabwasa is striving to make meals healthier for families facing barriers to accessing nutritious food. Factors such as transportation, income, and the availability of grocery stores in their communities can significantly impact individuals’ ability to access food. The recent closure of the King Soopers grocery store on South Academy has further exacerbated the demand for Food to Power’s services.

Another non-profit benefiting from the grant funding is Peak Education. This organization provides mentoring and education support to students in Harrison School District 2 and Colorado Springs School District 11. CEO Carlos Jimenez highlighted the alarming statistic that only around 40 percent of students in many partner schools pursue post-secondary education options. To attain a living wage in Colorado, about 75 percent of jobs require some sort of post-secondary education upon high school graduation. While these options extend beyond enrolling in traditional universities, many program participants at Peak Education pursue higher education or job training certifications. Notably, the organization’s annual report indicates that 93 percent of participants pursue higher education, and 9 out of 10 become the first in their families to earn a college degree.

What sets Peak Education apart is its long-term commitment to students and families. The organization accompanies students for a duration of 10 years, providing consistent support and guidance throughout their educational journeys. This long-term approach ensures that students have the necessary resources to succeed and reach their full potential.

In addition to supporting local charities that are actively working to bridge racial gaps in areas such as health, income, and education, the Racial Equity Fund is reshaping philanthropy by introducing new donors and networks to underrepresented groups. By uniting donors of color and their allies, the fund aims to leverage collective wealth and foster meaningful impact within these communities.

The Racial Equity Fund is paving the way for a more inclusive and just society, championing the efforts of non-profit organizations dedicated to addressing the pressing issues faced by communities of color. Through their support, these organizations are making significant strides in improving educational outcomes, health equity, and overall well-being.
