Sudan Struggles with Cholera Outbreak Amid Ongoing Conflict: WHO Offers Increased Support

As Sudan continues to grapple with an intense conflict between opposing militaries, a cholera outbreak has emerged in the Gedaref state. In response to this alarming situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) is stepping up its support in the affected region.

According to official reports from the United Nations, Gedaref State has declared a cholera outbreak, with 264 suspected cases, 4 confirmed cases, and 16 associated deaths reported as of September 25, 2023. Authorities are also investigating whether cholera has spread to Khartoum and South Kordofan states, where an increased number of acute watery diarrhea cases have been observed.

In an effort to coordinate the response and address the outbreak, Dr. Nima Abid, the WHO Representative in Sudan, visited Gedaref State on September 17 and met with health authorities and partners. Dr. Abid emphasized the importance of unhindered access to affected and neighboring localities to effectively respond to the outbreak. Highlighting the fragile nature of the health system, Dr. Abid pointed out the devastating impact a cholera outbreak can have, especially considering the existing challenges of war, shortages of medical supplies and health workers, malnutrition, and access constraints.

Even before the official declaration of the outbreak, WHO had already provided essential cholera supplies, including antibiotics, oral rehydration solution, intravenous fluids, and rapid diagnostic test kits to six states, including Gedaref, Khartoum, and South Kordofan. This proactive approach aimed to mitigate the impact of potential outbreaks and ensure a swift response.

Unfortunately, Sudan’s health system is struggling due to attacks on health facilities, scarcity of medical supplies and equipment, shortage of health workers, and operational funding limitations. In conflict-affected states, around 70% of hospitals are non-functional, and even non-conflict-affected states face overwhelming pressure from the influx of internally displaced people.

Adding to Sudan’s challenges, the country is also dealing with unprecedented mass displacement, disease outbreaks, and malnutrition, all exacerbated by heavy rains and flooding. This combination of factors has stretched the healthcare system to its limits and necessitates immediate action to prevent further suffering and loss of life.

The WHO’s scaled-up support and coordination efforts are crucial in tackling the cholera outbreak in Sudan. By providing essential supplies and working closely with local authorities and partners, the WHO aims to contain and mitigate the outbreak’s impact. However, sustained efforts, increased resources, and international support are necessary to overcome the widespread challenges facing Sudan’s healthcare system.

As the situation in Sudan unfolds, it is essential for the global community to remain attentive and responsive. The suffering of the Sudanese people must be addressed comprehensively and urgently, combining political solutions to conflict with robust healthcare interventions. Only through collective action can we hope to alleviate the burden on Sudan and prevent further tragedy.
