India’s top court has upheld a ban on bike taxis in New Delhi, a decision which is seen as a setback for Uber and other ride-hailing services. In February, Delhi authorities had asked digital companies to cease offering personal bike taxis as they violated city rules. Uber challenged the ban in court, with the Delhi High Court allowing it to continue operations. However, the city appealed to the Supreme Court, which has now reinstated the ban. Uber said its bike riders’ livelihoods were at stake. The company’s bike taxi service in Delhi made 1.9 million trips to and from metro rail stations in 2020.
