New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be working remotely while isolating, according to his office on Sunday. This comes just two weeks before the general election. Hipkins, who has been experiencing cold and flu symptoms since Saturday, will isolate for five days or until he receives a negative test result. In the meantime, he will continue with his engagements virtually through Zoom.
The positive test will temporarily keep Hipkins away from the campaign trail as his incumbent Labour party strives to secure another term in office. He was scheduled to attend a Samoan church service in Auckland on Sunday, but Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni will now take his place. More information about his schedule will be provided in due course, as stated by the prime minister’s office.
It is worth noting that the New Zealand government lifted all remaining COVID-19 requirements in August. However, health authorities still recommend that individuals stay home for five days if they feel unwell or test positive for the virus.
