Massachusetts Man Indicted for Attack on Flight Attendant and Attempted Aircraft Door Opening
A Massachusetts man has been indicted for his alleged attack on a flight attendant and his attempt to open an emergency door during a cross-country flight. Francisco Severo Torres, from Leominster, is facing charges of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon. The incident occurred on United Airlines Flight 2609 from Los Angeles to Boston on March 5.
During the flight, Torres reportedly went on a midair rant and attempted to stab a crewmember with a modified metal spoon. As the plane was approaching Boston, the crew received an alert that a side door on the aircraft had been disarmed. One flight attendant noticed that the door’s locking handle had been moved, and another saw Torres near the door, suspecting he had tampered with it. However, it should be noted that cabin pressure prevents airplane doors from opening during the flight.
Witnesses shared that Torres started shouting bizarre statements, claiming that his father was Dracula and expressing a desire to be shot so he could be reincarnated. He also made threats to kill everyone on board. Torres then physically assaulted a male flight attendant, hitting him three times with the broken metal spoon. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
