A nurse in Santa Ana, California has been sentenced to jail for assaulting an 87-year-old woman with dementia at a senior living facility. Juan Sandoval, 35, pleaded guilty to assault with the intent to commit a sex offense and sexual battery on an institutional victim. As part of a plea deal, a lewd act charge was dismissed. Mr. Sandoval will serve 364 days in jail and must participate in a sex offender program. Additionally, he will be on formal probation for six years. The incident occurred on February 25, 2021, when police were called to the Sunflower Gardens Senior Living Facility following an allegation of sexual assault by a caretaker. Mr. Sandoval took the woman into a bedroom where he assaulted her. A co-worker witnessed the attack, confronted Mr. Sandoval, and immediately alerted a supervisor. The police arrived and arrested Mr. Sandoval, who was still on the job at the time. The victim’s family hopes that this sentencing will bring justice and ensure the safety of other vulnerable residents in care facilities.
