Vietnam has reported its fourth case of monkeypox as infections continue to rise in the country. The 22-year-old woman is currently quarantined at the Tan Uyen City medical center, according to the Binh Duong Department of Health. Authorities have also taken measures to disinfect areas near the patient’s home, while the Binh Duong Center for Disease Control (CDC) is conducting contact tracing to prevent further infections.

The woman’s boyfriend, who resides in the neighboring Dong Nai Province, was confirmed as the third monkeypox case in Vietnam. The source of his infection remains unknown, as he began displaying symptoms such as fever, chills, and blisters on September 17. Despite seeking treatment at a private clinic, his symptoms did not subside. He was later diagnosed with monkeypox at the HCMC Hospital of Dermato Venereology, where further testing confirmed the presence of the virus. The man is currently under quarantine in HCMC.

This recent wave of monkeypox infections began in May 2022, affecting countries that had not previously seen cases of the virus, including the U.S., the U.K., Sweden, and Belgium. Over 90,000 cases have been confirmed worldwide, with death rates reaching as high as 11%. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency in July 2022 in response to the rising number of infections.

Monkeypox is characterized by symptoms such as rashes, blisters, fever, aches, and fatigue, with an incubation period ranging from 5 to 21 days. Currently, Vietnam does not have a vaccine or cure for this disease.

In light of the ongoing outbreak, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of monkeypox. Adhering to good hygiene practices, maintaining social distancing, and regularly sanitizing oneself and surroundings can greatly reduce the risk of infection.

As the authorities continue their efforts to contain and trace the virus, it is hoped that the situation will be brought under control and further transmission can be prevented. However, it serves as a reminder of the importance of global cooperation in combating infectious diseases and the need for a coordinated response to protect public health worldwide.
