Exploring the Depths of Orcadian Education: A Week-Long Journey Reveals Surprising Insights

When I took on the role of education writer for The Herald, my goal was clear: to bring greater depth, complexity, and expertise to coverage of Scottish education. I wanted to highlight both the positive stories and the challenges faced by teachers, students, and parents. However, one of my main targets was to broaden the focus beyond the central belt and shed light on education across Scotland. It seemed that too much attention was given to areas between Paisley and Leith, which resulted in resentment from communities outside of that bubble.

As a full-time journalist, I was determined to break free from the constraints of a fixed timetable. I knew that to do my job properly, I had to venture out on journeys—by road or rail—and invest the time and effort required. Flying visits or endless Zoom calls couldn’t provide the in-depth understanding necessary for a complex topic like education.

So, I packed my bag, got in my car, and embarked on a week-long journey to Orkney—a place I had briefly visited before during my travels for my book, A Scottish Journey. On that trip, I heard intriguing stories about the schools in Orkney, and I had always wanted to return. Although it was an experimental venture, I took the chance to explore and learn more about the education system in Orkney.

Initially, I had concerns about whether the council would be open to my visit as an unknown journalist from a Glasgow paper. Would anyone be willing to talk to me? Could I gather enough material to justify the investment of time and money? These doubts occupied my mind as I sailed to Stromness on a ferry after a long drive north. However, to my relief, the council was extremely accommodating, and everyone I spoke to welcomed me with open arms. To top it all off, I even had to call my editor from a picturesque beach in Westray to explain that I would need more space than originally anticipated.

And so, our week-long special on Orcadian education was born. Over the next few days, you will have the opportunity to read more than a dozen pieces covering various topics, such as community development, LGBTQ+ inclusion, sports coaching, boarding arrangements, and career moves. Each article provides a snapshot of Orkney’s education system, but it is important to note that they do not constitute an in-depth analysis or propose that their model should be replicated elsewhere. Rather, these articles reflect my impressions and conversations with dozens of individuals within and outside the education system in Orkney.

Throughout the week, I had the chance to witness the remarkable aspects of Orkney’s education system and the challenges it faces. This journey has given me valuable insights, showcasing the unique qualities of a truly extraordinary place like Orkney. It is my hope that through these articles, readers will gain a better understanding and appreciation for the diverse educational experiences across Scotland.

In the coming days, delve into the world of Orcadian education, as we uncover the triumphs, complexities, and aspirations that exist beyond the central belt. Join me on this journey of discovery and celebration of Scotland’s rich educational landscape.
