Boris Johnson’s Urgent Visit to Northern Ireland Amid Brexit Deadlock Threat
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is making a crucial visit to Northern Ireland in an effort to resolve a political stalemate that is preventing the formation of a regional administration. However, certain goods, including meat and eggs, entering Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK are now subject to checks, a provision that is met with opposition by unionists in Northern Ireland. They argue that these new checks place a burden on businesses and strain the relationship between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
The British government concurs that the current regulations are undermining Northern Ireland’s peace agreement, which relies on the support of both Protestant unionist and Catholic nationalist communities.
