Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan Summoned by Court over Alleged ‘Un-Islamic’ Marriage

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been summoned by a local court in Islamabad on September 25 in connection with a case regarding his alleged ‘un-Islamic’ marriage with Bushra Bibi, according to The Express Tribune. Imran Khan, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the Toshakhana case, will be presented before the court as per the order issued by Civil Judge Qudratullah to the Superintendent Attock Jail.

The case revolves around allegations that Imran Khan got married to his third wife during her Iddat period, which is a specified waiting period after divorce or the death of a husband in Islamic tradition. Imran Khan’s lawyer will challenge the court’s jurisdiction in hearing the case during the upcoming hearing.

The controversy surrounding Imran Khan’s marriage emerged when a petition seeking criminal proceedings against him and his wife for cohabiting after their first nikah, which allegedly took place during Bushra Bibi’s Iddat period, was accepted by a trial court. The judicial magistrate in Islamabad, Qudratullah, issued a nine-page detailed judgment on July 18, declaring the petition admissible and directing Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to appear in court.

Imran Khan filed a petition challenging the trial court’s decision, arguing that the allegations mentioned in the private complaint do not constitute an offense within the Pakistan Penal Code. He further stated that the continuation of the trial would amount to an abuse of the law’s process. However, the case proceeded, with another civil court dismissing a plea challenging the legality of the marriage as inadmissible.

The upcoming hearing will provide an opportunity for Imran Khan’s lawyer to present arguments against the court’s jurisdiction in handling the case. The outcome of the hearing will determine the course of the legal proceedings concerning Imran Khan’s alleged ‘un-Islamic’ marriage.

This development adds to the challenges faced by Imran Khan, who has already been convicted in the Toshakhana case and is currently serving time in jail. As the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan’s personal life has come under scrutiny, and these legal proceedings have further intensified the focus on his actions and decisions.

It remains to be seen how the court processes unfold and whether Imran Khan’s lawyer can successfully challenge the court’s jurisdiction in this case. The case has attracted significant attention due to its religious and cultural implications, and both supporters and critics of Imran Khan will be closely watching the developments in the legal proceedings.

As the hearing date approaches, Imran Khan and his legal team will be preparing their arguments to present before the court. The outcome of this case will not only impact Imran Khan personally but also hold broader implications for the interpretation of religious practices and legality in Pakistan.
