Nonprofit Donates to NICU Families at USA Health: A Mother’s Inspiring Story
September is NICU awareness month, a time dedicated to honoring families with babies staying in the neonatal intensive care unit. In Mobile, Alabama, a local organization is going above and beyond to give back to these families, providing much-needed support during difficult times. The Skylar Project, a nonprofit organization founded by Latoya Blueford, is making a difference by donating essential items to the NICU families at USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital.
Ten years ago, Blueford experienced a devastating loss when her daughter Skylar, born weighing just 1 pound, 11 ounces, passed away after spending 10 months in the NICU. This heartbreaking event inspired Blueford to create The Skylar Project, aiming to spread the same joy and positivity that Skylar embodied. Through her organization, Blueford has been able to donate various items to NICU families at USA Health, including snacks and protein-rich foods for lactating mothers.
One former NICU mom, Victoria Redmond, vividly recalls the impact of meeting Blueford while her adopted son Britton was in the NICU at USA Health. The Skylar Project provided materials for an unforgettable ugly onesie decorating contest, bringing a much-needed sense of joy and laughter during a challenging time. Touched by the generosity she experienced, Redmond now pays it forward by assisting a parent educator in the NICU and plans to volunteer with The Skylar Project.
Courtney Thomson, a nurse who has been working in the NICU at USA Health since 1999, explains that the hospital cares for approximately 70 to 80 babies in their NICU. Their cases range from babies with respiratory problems to those who are incredibly small and can fit in the palm of your hand. Thomson emphasizes that the help and support from organizations like The Skylar Project, as well as dedicated volunteers like Redmond, are greatly appreciated by the hospital staff.
