Mexican Singer Peso Pluma Faces Death Threats & Concert Cancellation After Viral TikTok Video

Mexican singer, songwriter, and guitarist Peso Pluma has been targeted with death threats and faced the cancellation of his upcoming concert in Tijuana, Mexico. The threats came in the aftermath of a viral TikTok video that speculated about his parentage, claiming he is the son of former Mexican actress Adela Noriega and ex-president Carlos Salinas de Gortari.

Fans of Peso Pluma, whose real name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, have rallied against the claims by suggesting he is actually related to the late Mexican singer Valentin Elizalde Valencia, who was assassinated in 2006. Nevertheless, the death threats intensified after the TikTok video gained traction.

The anonymous death threats were displayed on banners throughout the city of Tijuana, specifically targeting Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija. Concerned for the safety of his team and fans, Peso Pluma decided to cancel his concert at Estadio Caliente, which was scheduled for October 14. The cancellation was announced on Instagram by his record labels Douple P Records and Prajin Music Group.

While the identity of the culprits remains unknown, fans believe the death threats may be linked to Peso Pluma’s songs, which often address the drug culture and cartel influence in Mexico. Clues suggesting the involvement of the Jalisco Nueva Generacion Cartel were found on the threatening banners, although the cartel has denied any responsibility and called for a police investigation.

Comparisons between Peso Pluma and Valentin Elizalde Valencia have emerged, not only due to their physical resemblance but also because of their fearless approach to music. Valentin gained notoriety in the 1990s for his songs targeting drug cartels and gangs before being tragically murdered in 2006.

In addition to the cancellation of his Tijuana concert, Peso Pluma has also postponed his upcoming shows in the United States. The reasons for these cancellations are currently unclear.

Peso Pluma’s popularity has extended beyond Mexico and was evident when he performed at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in New Jersey, becoming the first Mexican artist to take the stage in the event’s history. He also made history as the first regional Mexican music artist to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in April 2023.

Known for hits such as AMG, PRC, Ella Baila Sola, and Genesis, Peso Pluma has achieved success on the Billboard charts and won the MTV Millennial Award for his song La Bebe in the Reggaeton Hit category. He has also received three nominations at the MTV VMAs 2023.

The threats and concert cancellations have sparked concern among Peso Pluma’s fans, who fear for his safety and hope that the situation will be resolved swiftly. The authorities have been called upon to investigate the death threats and ensure the protection of the singer and his supporters.
