Pakistan Election Commission Announces January 2024 Polls
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially declared that the next general elections will be held in January 2024, according to a statement by the ECP. The polls are expected to take place during the last week of January, which has been confirmed by the poll body itself.
The ECP has stated that it thoroughly examined the allocation of seats before making this decision. As part of the election process, the preliminary list of constituencies will be published on September 27, 2023. Furthermore, the final list of constituencies will be released on November 30, after addressing any complaints or comments received in response to the preliminary lists.
The election period will then span over 54 days, with voting scheduled to take place in the final week of January 2024. This announcement follows Pakistan President Arif Alvi‘s invitation to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja for a meeting to determine an appropriate date for the general elections. However, due to a recent amendment to the Elections Act 2017, the ECP now has the sole authority to announce election dates without consulting the president.
After the dissolution of Pakistan’s National Assembly in August, Senator Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar was appointed as the caretaker Prime Minister of the country. Prime Minister Kakar has expressed his hopes that the ECP will ensure the conduct of free and fair elections in accordance with the Constitution. He also emphasized that the prerogative to announce the election date lies solely with the ECP, even though the president initially made the announcement.
