US Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Expand North Korea Sanctions for Support in Ukraine
Two members of the US Congress have recently introduced a bill aimed at expanding existing sanctions against North Korea. The proposed legislation focuses specifically on North Korea’s support for Russia’s involvement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Representatives Gerry Connolly and Joe Wilson presented the bill, titled To provide for the imposition of sanctions with respect to North Korea’s support for Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine, to the House of Representatives on Monday.
The introduction of this bill follows a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place last week. Concerns arose regarding a potential arms deal between the two countries, with Seoul and Washington cautioning that such an agreement would violate multiple United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
Within the bill’s text, the lawmakers highlight the fact that if Russia or entities backed by Russia acquire arms or other related materials from Pyongyang, it would go against UNSC resolutions that Russia itself had supported. These resolutions were implemented to prevent the regime from exporting such items.
The bill specifically calls for the US president to impose sanctions on any foreign individuals or entities that are either responsible or facilitate the transfer or sale of North Korean arms or material support. The intention behind these measures is to prevent such weaponry from reaching Russian forces involved in the conflict in Ukraine.
Representative Connolly emphasized the need to take decisive action against the alliance between Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin, stating, Kim Jong-un’s material support for Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine will mark a dangerous partnership between two malign actors that threaten global peace. He further added, We cannot allow this unholy partnership to go unchecked. It’s time for the United States to take decisive action and thwart North Korean arms from being used in Putin’s bloody war against the Ukrainian people.
Both Connolly and Wilson hold key positions in the Congressional Caucus on Korea, a group of US lawmakers dedicated to fostering strong relationships with South Korea.
As this bill moves forward, discussions around the potential expansion of sanctions against North Korea are likely to intensify.
