BJP Lok Sabha MP Raju Bista has urged for the deployment of central forces in West Bengal to ensure free and fair panchayat elections scheduled for July 8th. Raju Bista’s call has been supported by Congress and other political parties. The West Bengal State Election Commission has called an all-party meeting on June 13th to discuss the panchayat polls. There have been concerns expressed from opposition parties about the conduct of the election, with the West Bengal Congress Chief, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, alleging that the Trinamool Congress was creating an atmosphere of fear in order to influence the vote. The panchayat polls in West Bengal are seen as an important test for the Bharatiya Janata Party and Trinamool Congress, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Candidates can file their nominations between June 11th and 15th.
