The India Meteorological Department has issued a Special Weather Bulletin alerting that Assam may experience heavy rainfall over the next five days. The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ which stands for watch and be updated, for Sunday and Monday, followed by ‘Orange Alerts’ from Tuesday to Thursday, which implies being prepared for action. The forecast is for fairly widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall/thunderstorm with lightning to occur over Assam during the next five days. This weather condition is likely to occur in other Northeastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. The rainfall may cause temporary disruption of traffic due to water logging in roads, uprooting of trees as well as breaking of tree branches, and uprooting of trees may cause damage to the power sector. Additionally, heavy rainfall may damage the standing crops and vegetables, people and animals can be injured by lightning, and flash floods and landslides are also likely to occur in many places.
