High-ranking LAPD Official Placed on Leave Amid Allegations of Stalking

Al Labrada, a high-ranking official in the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), has been placed on administrative leave following allegations of stalking. The decision was announced by LAPD Chief Michel Moore at a meeting of the Board of Police Commissioners. Labrada, who serves as one of three assistant chiefs reporting to Moore, is facing accusations of using an Apple AirTag to track the movements of an LAPD police officer with whom he had a romantic relationship.

The Ontario police received a report from the officer, claiming that she discovered an AirTag among her personal belongings. The AirTag is a small tracking device that can be attached to items. As a result, an internal investigation was launched by the department, and Labrada’s city-issued phone was confiscated. Chief Moore expressed his concern regarding the allegations, stating that they are being taken very seriously. He also emphasized the department’s commitment to cooperating with the external agency conducting the investigation.

In response to the allegations, Labrada has denied them repeatedly and is considering taking legal action. His civil attorney, Jeremy Tissot, issued a statement clarifying that the reported stalking allegations are false and misleading. Tissot expressed confidence in Labrada’s eventual vindication and revealed that they are exploring potential legal remedies against those responsible for the false and defamatory claims.

The LAPD has assigned the inspector general’s office to monitor the internal investigation, ensuring objectivity and impartiality throughout the process. Labrada’s absence from command, as signified by an email sent to department personnel, will last for one week. During his absence, Deputy Chief David Kowalski will assume leadership of the Office of Special Operations.

Labrada’s placement on administrative leave represents a significant development for someone considered a potential internal candidate for LAPD Chief Moore’s position. As the highest-ranking Latino official in a department where over half of the officers identify as Latino, Labrada’s case has stirred attention. It is worth noting that Labrada is not the first high-ranking LAPD official to abruptly leave his post amid allegations of misconduct. In 2018, another assistant chief retired following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a female subordinate.

Apple AirTags, introduced in 2021 to help track lost personal items, have raised concerns among advocates for victims of domestic violence. They warn that such devices can be used for monitoring individuals without their knowledge or consent. Recently, allegations of LAPD officers misusing AirTags also emerged during an FBI investigation into a Valley-area gang unit for potential civil rights violations.

The LAPD’s handling of the investigation will be closely watched to ensure transparency and accountability. The allegations against Labrada highlight the importance of addressing any potential misconduct within law enforcement agencies to maintain public trust and confidence.
