Media-Related Killings During Marcos Administration Swiftly Addressed, Arrests Made – Presidential Task Force

Media-related killings during the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. have received prompt attention and action from the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, as reported on Tuesday. The task force’s executive director, Paul Gutierrez, stated that the reported cases under President Marcos were swiftly dealt with, ensuring that justice was served.

Notably, arrests have been made in several cases. Warrants have been issued, resulting in the incarceration of the suspects involved. In other instances, efforts are being made to locate and apprehend the remaining individuals, such as in the case of Percy Lapid. Additionally, the task force personally engaged with one of the suspects in the Mindoro case, who was already in the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). The hearings for these cases will soon commence, ensuring a fair and thorough legal process.

One of the tragic incidents occurred in October 2022, when radio broadcaster Percy Lapid was ambushed and killed in Las Piñas City. Another case involved the shooting and subsequent death of journalist Cris Bundoquin in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, in May 2023. Furthermore, the suspect connected to the shooting incident involving photojournalist Joshua Abiad in June 2023 has been successfully apprehended.

In recognizing the risks faced by journalists, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights and safety of media practitioners. In his message, he conveyed the commitment of the Department of Justice, in partnership with the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO), to protect journalists. Highlighting the significance of a conducive legal battle over acts of violence, PAO chief Persida Acosta urged those with grievances against media professionals to pursue the legal process rather than resorting to weapons or violence.

The Philippine government, through the collaborative efforts of relevant agencies, vows to create a safer environment for the media community. Protecting the rights and well-being of journalists remains paramount as a free and vibrant media landscape is essential for a democratic society. By swiftly addressing media-related killings and ensuring justice, the government aims to foster an atmosphere where journalists can carry out their vital work without fear.
