Cancer Death Rate in US Drops by 33%, 14 New Therapeutics Approved: AACR Report

According to the latest AACR Cancer Progress Report 2023 published by the American Association for Cancer Research, the age-adjusted overall cancer death rate in the United States has decreased by an impressive 33% from 1991 to 2020. This remarkable decline is a result of significant advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment methods. The report also highlights the approval of 14 new anticancer therapeutics by the US Food and Drug Administration, offering hope for patients and further improving cancer outcomes.

Among the newly approved therapies are a gene therapy-based immunotherapeutic for bladder cancer, a groundbreaking antibody drug conjugate for ovarian cancer, and four innovative T-cell engaging bispecific antibodies for hematologic malignancies. Additionally, two new imaging agents have been approved, and the use of 12 previously approved anticancer treatments has been expanded.

With a focus on specific cancer types, the report demonstrates a 43% decline in breast cancer mortality between 1989 and 2020. Furthermore, the mortality rate for lung cancer has seen a remarkable acceleration in decline, from a 0.9% annual decrease between 1995 and 2005 to nearly 5% per year between 2014 and 2020.

Margaret Foti, PhD, MD, the chief executive officer of the American Association for Cancer Research, expressed hope that this comprehensive report would enhance knowledge about various cancer diseases and the innovative research that is extending and improving lives.

The statistics provided in the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2023 are encouraging, indicating progress in the fight against cancer. The decrease in mortality rates and the approval of new therapeutics offer optimism for patients and their loved ones. As researchers continue to delve into the complexities of cancer, these advancements provide a glimmer of hope for a future where cancer is more effectively prevented, detected, and treated.

Overall, this report serves as a valuable resource in understanding the changing landscape of cancer and the ongoing efforts to combat this devastating disease. With continued focus and dedication, the medical community aims to further reduce the burden of cancer and improve the lives of patients worldwide.
