Police Dog Suffers Assault by Suspect in Cass Lake; Recovery in Progress
CASS LAKE — In a shocking incident, a police dog is currently undergoing recovery after being assaulted by a suspect in Cass Lake. The incident took place on Sunday evening, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement authorities.
According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, a distress call was received around 4:45 p.m. regarding an ongoing assault at a residence in rural Cass Lake. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies were informed that Kyote Windom, a 27-year-old resident of Cass Lake, had allegedly been wielding an axe and attacking people in the area. Fortunately, two adult men suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention.
Seeking to apprehend the suspect, law enforcement officers initiated a search of the surrounding area. Shortly thereafter, they located the individual nearby. As the authorities attempted to take him into custody, Deputy Ryan Huston released his trusted K9 partner, Ryker, to assist in the operation.
Tragically, the suspect violently swung a large metal pipe, striking K9 Ryker twice in the head with considerable force, causing significant injury. The assailant was subsequently apprehended, while Ryker was swiftly rushed to an emergency veterinarian hospital in the Twin Cities for immediate treatment. Although the extent of Ryker’s injuries is yet unknown, he is currently receiving medical care.
Ryker, a remarkable 6-year-old German Shepard, has faithfully served alongside Deputy Huston and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office for four years. This brave canine officer has been integral to numerous successful operations, aiding in the protection of the community his unit serves.
